About this event

UG Social presents Downtown Meeting

Live performance featuring Cal Lyall (guitar), Cherif El Masri (guitar), Adham Zidan (bass) and Fhunyue Gao (theremin).

8-11PM

UG Social presents a rare meeting of international artists with distinct voices—Cal Lyall (guitar), Cherif El Masri (guitar), Adham Zidan (bass) and Fhunyue Gao (theremin). Moving across ambient traditions, drone/psych improv and electronics, the group draws on experimental practices, traditional forms, noise textures and open-ended, unfolding composition. Come down for a night of unexpected turns.

Cal Lyall

Tokyo-based musician and sound artist working with improvisation, spatialization and urban noise. He plays guitar and banjo in projects including Osoyoos and Uminari, and works with multichannel sound and projection through his unit Paracollider. He has contributed to over 60 releases and has toured across Asia, Europe, North America, Africa and the Middle East. He founded the Test Tone concert series in Tokyo and runs the Subvalent label, which releases drone-psych, noise and ambient electronica from Japan.

Cherif El-Masri

Composer, performer, multi-instrumentalist, and improviser hailing from Cairo. His primary output since 2016 has been through the solo project Tarkamt (harsh noise/ambient). He is also a member of the psychedelic rock and folk band The Invisible Hands. Other collaborators and projects he’s been involved with include Alvarius B., Nadah El Shazly, Moon Juice, Eyvind Kang, Jessika Kenney, Asher Gamedze’s Another Time Ensemble and Ryan O’Connor.

Adham Zidan

Composer, performer, recordist, mixer and producer from Giza. He is a member of Baskot Lel Baltageyya, The Invisible Hands, Today Is Tomorrow, and Another Time Ensemble. His work spans music, sound design and interdisciplinary performance, with compositions for theatre, dance and film. Adham has worked in the studio and/or live with artists such as Alvarius B., Maurice Louca, Nancy Mounir, Raed Yassin among others. His latest piece, How It Ends, is an installative composition in nine movements for nine musicians. Alongside music, he has created and hosted podcasts, talks and radio shows, and currently co-manages a residency program between Prozess in Bern and the Beirut & Beyond Festival in Beirut.

Fhunyue Gao

Geneva-based thereminist, performer and multidisciplinary artist working across music, dance and performance. Active in both institutional and underground contexts, she collaborates on theatre and performance projects in Switzerland and develops her own work across sound and movement. As a self-taught musician, she performs solo under the name YUE 月G and with the duo Junee under others, and creates music for stage productions, working with theremin and electronics to shape shifting tones, sustained frequencies and fluid melodic lines.
